2 concepts: Argument and Rhetoric
Argument: Reasoned Thinking, essence of an argument; thesis, what the argument tries to prove
Reason is a sentence telling why the claim should be believed as true, needs to be supported with factual evidence
claim needs to be backed up by more than on reason
Rhetoric: the art of effective persuasion, there are tons of examples in the real world
Responsible argument is not a one way street
Too often people do not think about whether an argument shows good reasoning
RESPONSIBLE REASONERS ARE WELL-INFORMED
Responsible arguments can be forceful but never are rude or insult the opposition.
opinions must be supported with reliable and current evidence if not argument is dismissed
Ignorance and inflexibility go together because it is easy to form an opinion when few or none of the facts get in the way and people can just assert their prejudices.
Knowing context means knowing the current range of opinion on an issue
debates basically helped formed our country

Conviction= earned opinion, achieved through thought and discussion
